What is Food Engineering?
It is a branch of engineering in which the physical, chemical, and biological sciences are applied to the processing, storage, and transportation of food, as well as the production and development of new foods. In other words, it is the branch of engineering that, with the help of scientific and engineering knowledge, ensures the safe processing, packaging, and distribution of food from farm to table, and ensures the proper utilization of food.
The Duties of a Food Engineer:
Producing safe food, developing new processing techniques and methods by conducting biochemical, technological, and economic evaluations during processing; utilizing food raw materials, preventing wasteful consumption of food resources, ensuring their conservation in terms of quality and quantity; producing new foods from waste when necessary; and, when required, utilizing raw materials in multiple ways, thereby increasing food diversity.
Food Engineering departments are responsible for monitoring the rapidly evolving field of food science and food processing techniques, interpreting and organizing this information in accordance with national realities, and generating and disseminating information that will support the development of unique methods.
One of the fundamental objectives of Food Engineering is to train technical personnel with an engineering perspective in food science and technology, in line with the development of the food industry in our country. For years, the subject of "FOOD," which has been addressed by different disciplines in our country with varying emphasis on other aspects, is approached holistically in Food Engineering Departments, thereby providing more functional services to the country in both education and knowledge generation.
About ASÜ Food Engineering
The Food Engineering Department, one of the 11 departments of Aksaray University's Faculty of Engineering, was established in 2012. Our department began its educational activities in the 2013-2014 academic year and admitted students to both daytime and evening classes based on their results in the University Entrance Exam administered by ÖSYM. Our first graduates graduated in the 2016-2017 academic year. Our department, which also began graduate studies in the 2013-2014 academic year, currently offers master's programs with thesis programs—a total of 1 Professor, 2 Associate Professors, 5 Assistant Professors, and 1 Research Assistant. There are 10 faculty members, including one department secretary. Our department conducts its research and education activities at the Faculty of Engineering on the Aksaray University campus.
